CDL Training Program
Our CDL training program provides practical, behind-the-wheel instruction designed to prepare students for the CDL skills test, road test, and a successful career in commercial driving.
What Is CDL Training?
CDL training is the hands-on portion of the licensing process that prepares students to safely operate commercial vehicles. After obtaining a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), students begin behind-the-wheel instruction with certified instructors to develop real-world driving skills required to pass the CDL exam and enter the trucking industry.

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction
Students receive hands-on driving experience in a controlled training environment under the supervision of qualified CDL instructors. Training focuses on vehicle control, shifting, backing maneuvers, and safe operation techniques.
Pre-Trip Inspection Training
Pre-trip inspection training teaches students how to properly inspect commercial vehicles and identify safety concerns. This portion of training is critical, as the pre-trip inspection is a required part of the CDL skills test.

CDL Skills & Road Test Preparation
Students are trained to perform all required CDL skills, including basic control maneuvers and on-road driving. Instruction is designed to build confidence and ensure readiness for the official CDL skills and road exams.
Career-Focused CDL Training
CDL training prepares students for real-world driving conditions and entry-level trucking positions. The program emphasizes safety, responsibility, and professional driving habits required in today’s commercial driving industry.

CDL Training Requirements
To begin CDL training, students must hold a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and meet state and federal eligibility requirements. CDL training is conducted according to state guidelines to ensure students are properly prepared for testing and employment.
Choose Your CDL License Class
After meeting CDL training requirements, students must choose the appropriate CDL license class based on the type of commercial vehicle they plan to operate. Troy CDL School offers training options for both Class A and Class B licenses.
Class A CDL Training
A Class A CDL allows drivers to operate combination vehicles such as tractor-trailers. This license is commonly required for long-haul trucking and jobs involving large trailers or heavy loads. Class A training focuses on advanced driving skills, backing maneuvers, and safe operation of combination vehicles.
Class B CDL Training
A Class B CDL allows drivers to operate single commercial vehicles without large trailers, such as straight trucks, dump trucks, buses, or delivery vehicles. This license is commonly required for local and regional driving jobs. Training focuses on vehicle control, safety procedures, and skills specific to single-vehicle driving.
