CDL Permit (CLP) Overview

The Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) is the first required step toward earning a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It allows students to legally practice operating a commercial vehicle while supervised by a qualified CDL holder. Before any behind-the-wheel training or road testing can begin, students must successfully obtain their CDL permit.

What the CDL Permit Allows You to Do

With a CDL permit, students can begin hands-on training and gain real-world experience operating commercial vehicles under instructor supervision. The permit confirms that the driver has passed the required written knowledge exams and understands essential safety rules, vehicle operation, and federal regulations.

CDL Permit Exam Requirements

To obtain a CDL permit, applicants must pass the required written knowledge exams at the DMV. These tests typically include General Knowledge and may also cover Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles, depending on the license class. Preparing properly for these exams is essential before beginning CDL driving training.

From CDL Permit to CDL License

Once the CDL permit is obtained, students can begin behind-the-wheel CDL training with a certified instructor. This training prepares drivers for the CDL skills test, pre-trip inspection, and road test required to earn a full Commercial Driver’s License and pursue employment in the trucking industry.
